The Effects of Teen Acne
What is acne?
According to MDacne, “50 million people in the U.S. have acne of some kind” (Harth). Acne is a skin condition consisting of blackheads, white heads, cysts, papules, pimples, pustules, and nodules that most commonly occurs during puberty. People of all ages can get acne, but it is more common in teenagers because of the hormonal changes that adolescents experience during puberty. More than 85% of teenagers deal with acne. Acne has a multitude of causes, including clogging of pores by an oil produced by the body called sebum, bacteria being trapped inside the pore, hormonal changes, heavy face creams, makeup, hair dyes, oily hair, clothing rubbing against skin, certain foods, sweat, stress, and more. Acne appears most commonly on the face, neck, chest, upper back, and shoulders, and symptoms can range from mild with little to no pain to severe and intense pain (Bruce).

About
Acne can be very frustrating to deal with and to get rid of, especially for teenagers because of how it changes the way they look. This is a time in their life where adolescents are experiencing bodily changes, self-identity, and social development. With acne affecting their appearance, it can disrupt those experiences. This type of skin condition can be treated and prevented, but treatment can be challenging for some adolescents. Although acne is common in teenagers, their struggle with it can negatively affect their mental health, leading to social withdrawal, lower self-esteem, and depression.
