The increased self-consciousness caused by acne can affect a teenager’s mental health significantly, often leading to social withdrawal. For instance, according to Diane Baker, a dermatologist from Portland, Oregon “Acne is an assault on teens' self-image and affects what they will do--whether they will try out for the school play, athletic teams, or class office. It makes them more reticent, less outgoing, less willing to take a chance, and less likely to participate in dances, dating, and social activities” (USA Today Magazine). Teenagers with acne may feel as if they do not look good or pretty because of the visible red bumps on their skin. As a result, they withdraw from social activities. These include participating in class, dating, going to work, practicing sports, or going out with friends and family. They do not want others to see this change in their skin, and the resulting social withdrawal can significantly impact their mental health.
